Dahab after Laguna: safe seafront eats and coffee stops

Dahab’s Laguna waterfront is usually the kind of place people in Egypt book for exactly one thing: a low-effort, high-reward beach day of shallow water, sandy entry, a sea breeze and long lazy breaks over coffee. But when swimming is interrupted, the area does not suddenly become pointless. It simply becomes a different kind of outing.

That shift matters now because authorities closed one of Dahab’s beaches on 13 September 2023 after an Egyptian woman was injured in a shark attack. Ahram Online reported that the victim received medical attention, while the Ministry of Environment said a committee had been formed to assess the situation and investigate the causes. The same report said the beach would remain closed until the situation was evaluated.

For anyone planning a Sinai day around Laguna, the safest response is obvious: do not treat a closure as optional. If access to the water is suspended or if officials and beach operators are telling people to stay out, rebuild the day around food, coffee, shade and the view instead. In Dahab, that is still very doable.

What Laguna still does well, even on a no-swim day

The reason Laguna remains worth the drive is its setting. The bay-side stretch is one of Dahab’s easier, sandier seafront zones, distinct from the coral-edge feel of Lighthouse and Masbat. Google’s hotel and place listings also show Laguna Beach Dahab and Dahab Lagoon Club & Resort as established points on the southern side of town, away from the tighter café rows of central Dahab.

That makes the area better suited to a sit-down seafront reset than a cramped wait-it-out. If swimming is off the table, think of Laguna as a place for breakfast with a view, a resort lunch, reading time, wind watching, or an afternoon coffee before heading north into town for dinner.

Best bet for staying in the Laguna zone: resort dining

Dahab Lagoon Club & Resort

If you want to remain close to Laguna without improvising, Dahab Lagoon Club & Resort is the most concrete dining anchor in the area. Booking listings describe the property as a beachfront resort about 5 km from Dahab’s center, with three restaurants and four bars. A separate Booking listing names its on-site Lagoon Restaurant and notes a sea-facing setting.

Why it works on a disrupted beach day is simple: you still get the bay, the palms and the open horizon without needing to enter the water. It is the closest thing to salvaging the mood of a Laguna day while keeping the plan firmly on land. If you are already staying nearby, this is the least complicated lunch option.

Safir Dahab Resort

Another practical nearby fallback is Safir Dahab Resort, on the Laguna side of town. Traveler information aggregated by Tripadvisor consistently describes it as a beachfront property with lagoon views and multiple food outlets, though recent guest comments indicate restaurant operations can vary, with some venues occasionally closed and one main restaurant carrying most of the service.

That means it is best approached as a comfortable hotel lunch stop, not a guaranteed multi-restaurant crawl. Still, if your priority is space, shade and a controlled seafront setting rather than town-center buzz, it remains a workable option.

For coffee worth the short detour: head into Dahab proper

Laguna is quieter than central Dahab, so if your beach plan is canceled, the smartest move is often to split the day: linger by the southern bay for the scenery, then continue to Lighthouse, Masbat or Assala for stronger café choices.

Everyday Cafe & Restaurant

Everyday Cafe & Restaurant is one of the strongest all-rounders if what you need is a dependable post-Laguna pivot. Tripadvisor ranks it among Dahab’s top coffee-and-tea spots and lists it at Masbat Square next to Ghazala Market and the Police Station. The listing says it serves breakfast, lunch, brunch and late-night food, with features including free Wi-Fi, outdoor seating and live music. It is also described as having sea views from indoor and outdoor seating.

For Egyptian visitors working remotely between dips, waiting out a windier afternoon, or simply wanting coffee that feels like a real stop rather than a convenience order, Everyday makes sense. It is not in Laguna itself, but it is one of the clearer answers to the question: where do we go now?

Onda Coffee & More

If you prefer a newer specialty-coffee style stop over a long restaurant sitting, Onda Coffee & More in Assala is one of Dahab’s fresher additions. Its official site says the café opened in 2025 and serves espresso drinks, Turkish coffee, tea pots, mocktails, bakery items, focaccia and cake slices. It lists its location as in front of New Bakar Supermarket, El Assala, and says it is open daily from 8:00 AM to 2:00 AM.

This is a good choice if the day has shifted from “beach club” to “coffee, pastry and regroup.” It is not a seafront venue in the classic Laguna sense, but for quality coffee and a calmer reset, it is a useful Dahab address to know.

Ralph’s German Bakery

For breakfast or an early pick-me-up before returning to the waterfront, Ralph’s German Bakery remains one of Dahab’s most established names. Tripadvisor lists it in the Lighthouse and Assala area, open daily from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with fresh bread and pastries baked every day. It ranks at the top of Dahab’s bakery category on the platform.

If Laguna’s water is off limits, one smart plan is to start here for breakfast, then continue south for a view-first, swim-free afternoon around the bay.

How to salvage the day safely

  • Treat official beach restrictions seriously. The 2023 closure was imposed by the Ministry of Environment after the shark incident while an assessment committee reviewed the site.
  • Keep the day land-based. Choose shaded tables, resort terraces and cafés rather than “just a quick dip.”
  • Split your itinerary. Laguna for scenery; Masbat, Lighthouse or Assala for stronger dining and coffee options.
  • Call ahead if a hotel restaurant is your main plan. Resort dining in Dahab can be seasonal or capacity-dependent, especially outside peak occupancy.

The bottom line

A beach closure at Laguna does not mean canceling Dahab altogether. It means adjusting expectations and leaning into what the town also does very well: low-key cafés, long breakfasts, bakery stops, and seafront meals with the mountains behind you and the Gulf of Aqaba ahead.

If you want to stay closest to the original plan, book yourself a slow lunch around Dahab Lagoon Club & Resort or another nearby hotel setup. If you want the best salvage strategy overall, move between zones: breakfast at Ralph’s German Bakery, coffee or an extended sit at Everyday Cafe & Restaurant, then a scenic pause by Laguna without entering the water. In a place like Dahab, even Plan B can still feel like the reason you came.
